The Commercial Driver’s License Training Academy will offer free, comprehensive 80-hour specialized driver training for approximately 48 students during the initial six-month pilot program, starting in spring 2022. The Driver Academy will provide students with a combination of in-class and field training to help them successfully pass DMV written exams and behind-the-wheel driving/field tests needed to obtain a California commercial driver’s license. Students will also receive the necessary training to acquire CPR/Basic First Aid certificates. The pilot will source students from Community Action Marin’s client base to help ensure that their basic needs are met and stabilization support is in place so they can focus on their Academy work and on securing a job upon graduation.
The goal of the academy is for underserved residents to attain a living wage job in an in-demand sector with growth potential. Students will have access to the full suite of Community Action Marin services: financial and career coaching; housing navigation; access to public benefits and other income supports; mental health services; free and affordable high-quality childcare; energy and cash assistance; and referrals to outside agencies as appropriate.
